Hold On to The Gospel (Galatians 1:1-9)
by Tan Huai Tze

If you lose the gospel, that is the good news of Jesus Christ, we learn here that we lose everything. We lost the basis for a right relationship with God, and we lost the resources to mend this broken world. Hence, we are exhorted to hold on to the gospel, by receiving the gospel as divine, and by resisting any distortions to the pure gospel.

Changed by the Gospel (Galatians 1:10-24)
by Tan Huai Tze

Paul defends his role as a messenger of the gospel in order to defend the integrity of the gospel. He gets personal and shares about how the gospel has changed him. It’s changed who he is, what he does, and whom he worships. The message is clear: if you lose the gospel, you lose the very power of God for real change.

Unity in the Gospel (Galatians 2:1-10)
by Tan Huai Tze

The gospel creates a deep unity among people from different cultural backgrounds. For this to happen, we must have a common view and faithfulness to the truth, a wise flexibility in the application of that truth, and a practical compassion that lives out this truth.

In Step with the Gospel (Galatians 2:11-21)
by Tan Huai Tze

The gospel is a message of grace that we believe, and believing in this gospel leads to many implications in all of life. Out of fear of man, we are all tempted to get out of step with the gospel. But, the gospel itself gives us the motivation to stay in step with the gospel by showing us that we are justified by faith, and united with Christ.

The Foolishness of Leaving the Gospel Behind (Galatians 3:1-9)
by Julian Wu

It is foolishness to add anything to Christ’s work for our salvation. We need to cling to the gospel by remembering the wonder and beauty of Jesus dying for sinners. Not only that, but we can look back on the work of the Holy Spirit in our own lives to grasp how all of God’s blessings in Christ come to us by faith alone. And all of this makes us one with the whole people of God through all of history, since the dawn of mankind in Adam and until Jesus returns.

Rely on Christ (Galatians 3:10-14)
by Tan Huai Tze

We are all relying on something or someone for a sense of well-being. The Apostle Paul here is urging us not to rely on the flimsy foundation of obeying the Law of Moses to be right with God, but rather on the sure and sturdy foundation of faith in Christ, the Christ who redeemed us by becoming a curse for us.

The Law in the Life of Grace (Galatians 3:15-22)
by Tan Huai Tze

If we are saved by grace, why did God give us the Law? In this passage, we see that it is indeed Christ alone who saves by grace, but that the Law is necessary to show us sin in all its ugliness. As we embrace Christ in the Gospel, the Law no longer oppresses us, but becomes a benevolent guide to the life that God wants us to live.

One People Under Grace (Galatians 3:23-29)
by Tan Huai Tze

There are forces at work that seek to tear communities apart, but God has given us a great resource in the gospel for true unity in diversity. The Law distinguishes between those who have obeyed, and those have disobeyed, while the gospel unites all those in Christ on the basis of His obedience. Because our ultimate value is in Christ, that frees us to recognise the faults in our own cultures, and enables us to celebrate the good in other cultures.

The Sonship Identity (Galatians 4:1-11)
by Tan Huai Tze

Being sons of God through Christ is the greatest gift of the gospel to those who are in Christ. This sonship identity is anchored in the historical work of Christ, and experienced through the Holy Spirit. It is something that should shape our entire lives. Sometimes, we forget that we are sons of God, and revert to slavery. That is when we most need the gospel to fire our hearts afresh with our sonship identity.

Wooing the Wayward (Galatians 4:12-20)
by Tan Huai Tze

Martin Luther said of Galatians 4:12-20 that, “these words breathe Paul’s own tears”. Here, he pleads with the Galatians to return to the fold of God. He urges them to remember the love and joy they had in the gospel, to recognize their present peril, and to return to God’s purpose for them, that is to make them holy.

Two Ways (Galatians 4:22-31)
by Tan Huai Tze

Paul now marshals a historical argument to persuade the Galatians to stick to grace and not works. He shows them, that this distinction between works and faith, law and grace has run through the pages of Scripture, and also their lives. He warns them to expect persecution, and, paradoxically, to work hard to stay in grace.

Keeping in Step with the Spirit (Galatians 6:1-10)
by Josh Irving

Prone to self-deceit and pride, we all require honest self-assessment in light of God’s Word. Paul warns of this, and provides several ways forward for the believer who seeks to ‘keep in step with the Spirit.

Boasting in the Cross (Galatians 6:11-18)
by Tan Huai Tze

Paul concludes the Book of Galatians by contrasting the foolishness of depending on mere ritualistic religion, with the freedom of boasting in the Cross of Christ. He calls on all of us to live our lives by the principle of grace, and not works.
